I am sure you are as troubled as I am by the murder that occurred Sunday evening in Downtown Cleveland. A friend of mine who works nearby received the following memo from his property manager. I found it very helpful in reminding us about how to stay safe, but also how to keep this tragedy in perspective. Please read and share.

"As with everyone, we are deeply saddened by Sunday’s tragedy. We are urging tenants to utilize the DCA Ambassadors for safety escorts if they feel unsafe and to call if they see something suspicious or amiss. The Ambassadors can be reached at 621-6000.

It is also important to put downtown safety in accurate context. According to FBI crime statistics, less than 5% of Cleveland’s crime happens Downtown. Furthermore, crime in virtually every major category is decreasing. In 2012, there was 1 homicide downtown, a statistic shared by many suburban communities. A Plain Dealer analysis of FBI crime statistics found one downtown neighborhood to be 8 times safer than an outer suburb. The safety of downtown is no accident: the regular presence of the Ambassadors and the close collaboration with the Cleveland Police Department’s Downtown Services Unit have led to decreasing crime rates and increasing safety."
